Nash Icicle Series Race 1 20 November 2005

The first of the five races of the Nash Icicle Series belied its name, with the thirty eight competing boats enjoying summer like conditions with a steady force 3 easterly wind.

The addiction that many skippers have for adopting a fan start at the starboard end of the line led to many agitated cries of alarm as the boats squeezed together to avoid the committee boat. Serious damage was only avoided by the leeward boats giving way to the boats illegally barging in at the windward end of the line. Strangely no protests were received. Sunshine on a Sunday must have must have a benevolent effect!

The IRC Division of nineteen boats divided into two classes was led throughout the race by MIGHTY MAX (Andrew Williams) who also claimed first place on handicap. John Nesbit from Falmouth sailing GBR 250 again joined the leaders as he has done in previous years and managed to take second place ahead of the race sponsor Guy Walker sailing THE CRAIC.

Class B of the IRC Division was led by EXTASY (Russell Curry) closely pursued by SEAWEED 3 (Peter Davis).

The first part of the race was sailed in the southern part of the Sound where, with steady wind, the tide had little effect. The strong ebb tide on the second part of the course, proved more challenging as the boats sailed close to the shore to finish off the Club line.

The Portsmouth Yardstick Division was led by ANDANTINO (Andrew Maltby) but on handicap first position was claimed by DOGS JORROCKS (Stephen Wassell) with PENDRAGON (Pat Cooke ) sailing one of the two much admired Dragon Class yachts second. The other Dragon Class yacht MOONBEAM was sailed BY David Jephcott into fourth position. Class B of Portsmouth yardstick division was won by HARRY FURLONG (Lee Page) thirty seconds ahead of JASRAH 111 (Ashley Crawford) with Stella Maris (Michelle Evans ) third.

Nash Icicle Series Race 2 Sunday 27th November 2005

The second race of the Nash Icicle Series organised by the Royal Western Yacht Club lived up to its name for the first time for many seasons. Decks were scrapped clear of ice and crews wrapped themselves in many layers of clothing to protect themselves from the cold northerly wind. But with many sporting sunglasses in the bright morning sunshine the scene was more reminiscent of a ski run than a sailing race in Plymouth Sound in midwinter.

The flood tide helped to push many of the over enthusiastic IRC Class over the start line necessitating a general recall and so enabling the more controlled starting tactics of the Portsmouth Class to start first on their first windward leg from the breakwater into Jennycliffe Bay. In the bright sunshine, with spinnakers set for the downwind legs from the Hoe foreshore to marks near the breakwater summer seemed to have returned, but it was the two International Dragon Class yachts, David Jephcott’s varnished MOONBEAM and Pat Cooke’s PENDRAGON, that helped to creat a truly regatta scene.

Three boats from the River Tamar Clubs of Torpoint and Saltash claimed the leading positions both on elapsed and corrected times with DOG’S JORROCKS Stephen Wassell first in Class A and IMARRA Robert Davis second and JAZZ Norman Curnow third.

In Portsmouth Yardstick Class B DIVA of ARDLAMON Chris Greensted suffered in the light wind approaching the first mark and lost contact with the leaders led by HARRY FURLONG Lee Page and JASRAH Ashley Crawford who claimed first and second positions respectively.

In IRC Division Class SEEWEED Peter Davis established an early lead and, as the wind gradually backed to the west, went on to claim line honours and first on handicap with JALAPENO Nicholas Over second.

Frank Ellwood sailed JUST MAGIC into first position in Class B with TWENTY Matthew Mills second.

Nash Icicle Series Race 3 4 December 2005

Sunglasses were again essential kit for competitors in the third race of the Nash Icicle series organised by the Royal Western Yacht Club. The sun shone and the sea was calm, very calm. The wind had clearly not tuned in to either the Met. Office Inshore shipping forecast or any of the local forecasts, and so instead of blowing from the west to northwest at 16 to 17 mpg as forecast blew, or failed to blow, from the north before gradually backing and increasing to four to five mph.

By then most boats were well on their way to the first windward mark. BIDWELL Peter Carpenter was particularly unfortunate in getting swept back over the line three times on the ebb tide before finally getting away. PENDRAGON (Pat Cooke) and STELLA ARIS (Michelle Evans) suffered from the same problem and as they got swept backwards failed to notice that they had not passed through the start line.

MIGHTY MAX (Andrew Williams) led the fleet at the end of the first windward/leeward part of the course but being only thirty seconds ahead of John Nesbit and Greg Peck’s 250 was not in a commanding position on handicap. TWENTY (Matthew Mills) forfeited a good position at the first leeward mark when it was realised, rather too late that a starboard hand rounding was required. Many other boats struggled to round the leeward mark in the strong ebb tide.

The Portsmouth Yardstick fleets were led by DOGS JORRCCKS (Stephen Wassell) closely followed by IMMARA (Robert Davis) and WESTAWAY SAILS) (Chris Davidson).

MIGHTY MAX Claimed line honours in the IRC Class but relinquished fist position on handicap to GBR 250 (John Nesbit/Greg Peck) with JUST MAGIC (Frank Ellwood) third.

In Class B of the Portsmouth Yardstick Division HARRY FURLONG (Lee Page) claimed both line honours and first on handicap ahead of PIPSQUEAK (Tim Burne). Chris Greenward persevered to finish just inside the time limit to give DIVA of ARDLAMONT third position.

In Class A of the Portsmouth Yardstick Division DOGS JORROCKS (Stephen Wassell) maintained his lead to the finish to claim line honours and first on handicap ahead of WESTAWAY SAILS (Chris Davidson) with IMMARA (Robert Davis) third.

Prizes were awarded by the sponsor Guy Walker of Nash & Co

Nash Icicle Series Race 4 Sunday 11 December 2005

A rather dismal scene greeted the competitors of the fourth race in the Nash Icicle Series organised by the Royal Western Yacht Club. With thick mist enveloping Plymouth Sound and a total absence of wind competitors gathered to drink coffee and to contemplate clearing their boat’s decks of ice.

A postponement of half an hour, however, was sufficient for the eastern side of the Sound to clear and for the wind to blow steadily from the north at seven knots and permit the competitors to tack off towards the windward mark in clear visibility and bright strong sunshine whilst the ferry made its way seaward shrouded in mist in the western half of the Sound.

THE CRAIC sailed by the sponsor, and although not the biggest or fastest boat, led the IR fleet as they approached the first leeward mark at Duke Rock and, in spite of a twisted spinnaker as they tacked downwind towards it, managed to round first closely followed by MIGHTY MAX (Andrew Williams) and another of the smaller boats JALAPENO (Nicholas Over).

The Portsmouth Yardstick Classes were led by WASTAWAY SAILS (Chris Davidson) and HARRY FURLONG (Lee Page).

After completing two circuits of the course in the Sound the boats made their way on the last of the flood tide to the finish line off the Club led by MIGHTY MAX closely followed by THE CRAIC. With the wind backing and decreasing to a zephyr in the shelter of the citadel it was by managing to keep the spinnaker full and staying in the strongest of the tide that enabled THE CRAIC (Guy Walker) to steal past MIGHTY MAX and claim both line honours and first on handicap in IR Class A.

JALEPENO maintained her early advantage to claim line honours and first on handicap in IR Class B with SEEWEED (Peter Davis) second.

DOGS JORROCKS (Stephen Wassell) led the Portsmouth Yardstick Fleets to the finish with a six minutes lead over WESTAWAY SAILS but had to accept close second on handicap. Boats favouring the southern side of the Cattewater failed to make the most of the tide and missed out to other boats on the northern side as they approached the finish line. HARRY FURLONG found the right track and secured a lead of five minutes to claim line honours which also ensured first position on handicap with JASRAH Ashley Crawford second.

Prizes were presented by The Commodore of the Royal Western Yacht Club.

Nash Icicle Series Race 5 18 December 2005

Thirty six boat’s, with the crew’s in festive garb, gathered for the start of the fifth race of the Nash Icicle Series organised by the Royal Western Yacht Club. Again the wind had failed to heed any of the forecast and refused to blow from any direction. After a half hour’s postponement to allow the wind to make up its mind the boats set off on the first leg of the course into a very gentle westerly breeze to round New Ground Buoy.

JALAPENO (Nick Over) managed to round first and create a commanding lead whilst the boats immediately behind, led by THE CRAIC (Guy Walker) MIGHTY MAX (Andrew Williams) and JALFREZI (Gareth Thomas), suffered in the strong ebb tide, often being swept backwards before eventually rounding the buoy. Two of the slower boats BIDWELL (Peter Carpenter) and DIVA of Ardlamon (Chris Greensted) benefited by arriving at the buoy and into the stronger tide as the wind gradually increased, and easily made up their time on handicap on the leaders.

On the first downwind leg the steadily increasing wind enabled the boats at the back of the fleet in both the IR and Portsmouth Yardstick Classes to catch up with the boats ahead leading to an exciting and congested rounding of the leeward mark.

With the wind building from the south west the fleet, after two further windward legs, enjoyed a fast spinnaker run to the finish off the Club line led by JALAPENO closely followed by MIGHTY MAX and PISSARRO (Sarah Creasey).

GB 250 (John Nesbit & Greg Peck) and crew, who had driven from Falmouth each Sunday to take part, claimed first prize for the fifth race and first for the series in Division A of the IR Class.

At the prizegiving, where the prizes were awarded by the sponsor Guy Walker of Nash & Co., a parade of the crew’s of DOGS JORROCKS and WEST END GIRL resulted in the prize for the best fancy dress being awarded, amidst much acclaim, to WEST END GIRL.

John Nesbit thanked the Club for organising the event, which he thought matched other events he had taken part in the Solent, and hoped to be back next year with more boats from Falmouth.
