Misdiagnosis

Everyone who works in healthcare strives to provide the best opinions when diagnosing an illness, disease or injury, but the reality is that determining the cause of medical conditions is often difficult; misdiagnosis is common and when some mistakes are made you are entitled to make a medical negligence claim which may result in compensation.

“Around half a million patients are harmed and some 3,000 people die each year as a direct result of failings by GPs, doctors, dentists, physiotherapists and chiropractors. Sometimes mistakes are made by a failure to diagnose a health problem correctly, diagnosing the wrong condition or through a delay with the diagnosis.”

How could I be affected?

Mistakes during hospital treatment can cause serious damage and there are a wide range of causes, such as failing to take the patient’s history into account, not examining the patient properly or making a poor record of all their symptoms. Other failings may result from X-rays, scans and blood tests that have not been carried out or where the results of such procedures have not been interpreted correctly.

And what about more general treatment?

Errors are not limited to hospital visits, sometimes patients suffer as a result of their GP or dentist failing to provide the correct treatment or not noticing when a health problem becomes worse and mistakes can also be made through inadequate care during and after a surgical procedure.
